Last Minute Own Goal - Wedding Trophy

Introducing a new segment in the Away Goals blog repertoire... the Last Minute Own Goal.  Each week we will discuss the lighter side (read, "stupid", "pointless", "hopefully funny") of the game, which will hopefully get you good people nattering away in the comments section... this week, Wedding Trophies!

As Britain descended into Royal wedding fever, a football fan can be forgive for searching out any possible links to the game during the 100 hour long exclusive, worldwide wedding footage.  I was looking for Beckham hidden away a few rows back when Elton John had a front row seat and I took a bit of pride in the fact that William spent his penultimate night as a bachelor playing the beautiful game.  What really peaked my interest were the trophies they had on the alter at Westminster Abbey.  A range of flashy plates adorned the alter, probably for the collection, but the centrepiece caught my eye.  It looked remarkably like the Bundesliga trophy or Wimbeldon Ladies trophy.  The question for the Last Minute Own Goal is, which football trophy would you have to decorate your wedding?

My choice is an easy one but there first needs to be a few honourable mentions.  Firstly, the first World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet trophy.  Not only is it steeped in World and English history, it also has a little cup held by the gold woman, perfect for sipping communion wine during the wedding, or the unholy stuff after.  It's just a shame the trophy got stolen from the offices of the Brazilian FA (who owned it for having won it three times) and melted down for gold.  A second honourable mention goes to Coppa Campioni d'Italia, the Italian Serie A trophy.  It's grand, it's gold, it's worth 60,000 Euros, and in its 45 years of existence prior to 2005 it was only awarded in private and not to the players on the pitch.  My guess is its really valuable and they don't trust the players with it.  Now, a wedding is all about grandeur so the so-posh-we-don't-trust-the-players (yes, Sergio Ramos, we're looking at you!) Serie A trophy would fit right in.  Anyway, those are just honourable mentions, my choice for a wedding trophy has to be the Europa League trophy (formerly the Uefa cup).  It's big, beautiful, could be a vase, could be a piece of 1970s art, but it's just a delicious trophy.  The bride couple keep her bouquet in it, and the lads could drink from it in the evening.  It was designed by the same company who designed the World Cup (which itself is a bit gaudy for a wedding), and for me it is just a beautiful trophy, fit for any wedding, even Royalty.

And one more mention to the worst suited trophy, the Scottish Premier league.  It's heavy and has lots of sharp edges, not good when you have lots of children running around!
